Interior Shutters are a unique product in that they're not really furniture nor cabinetry but would more appropriately be considered a window treatment. There are few Furniture/Cabinetry shops that offer custom interior wooden shutters and even fewer shops specializing in window treatments that carry them, at least in historically styled raised panel designs made of real wood. These facts and the requests of clients is the reason that I offer them in addition to the variety of home furnishings and cabinetry that I build.
All of my shutters are quoted per job/window rather than flat rate. Prices are determined after consulting the customer based on style, finish, type of hardware and number of shutters and raised or flat panels. Most sets of shutters range from $300 to over $500 depending upon window size, style and finish of shutter as well as hardware selection. Keep in mind that a great deal of fabrication is involved in each set in addition to finishing time especially for a large number of windows therefore our prices reflect this accordingly. (Sorry, but louvered shutters or plantation style are not available). We also offer mail order shutters on occassion using your own measurements. These shutters are no different than our others except that we will ship (shipping is extra) them to you based on the measurements you provide for your window opening and preferred mounting. The installation will be up to you and you may even choose to finish them yourself. For mail order inquiries just call or send and email of what you are looking for and we can go from there.
Design Essentially the design of a shutter is nothing more than a long narrow cabinet door, however the layout designs can have countless variety. Depending upon the size of your windows shutters can consist of one, two, or four shutters. In cases where cafe' style shutters are desired an upper and lower set (8 shutters) may be used or simply a lower set (4 shutters).
The design of the shutter itself can also be quite varied having a single raised or flat panel even two or three panels may be used on a single shutter depending on the window height. Another feature that is often uncommon with many custom builders and manufacturers of shutters are ship-lapped joints or an overlay feature where the joints in between the shutters and where they come together is rabetted or lapped forming a 3/8" overlay (one shutter overlaps the other forming a flush joint). This feature basically blocks any light from entering between the panels where they are hinged and provides total privacy. All shutters are made from Poplar or Basswood.
Finish Your custom shutters may be either stained or painted, they may also be done with stain on one side and paint on the other. We give two coats of stain or paint to each side for color depth and penetration (for stained finishes these are top coated with lacquer or UV resistant varnish and another option you may consider is a distressed aged look featuring crackle or a peeled paint effect or glaze.
Hardware Much like all of our Furniture pieces you also have a extensive variety of hardware to choose from such as non-mortised hinges between the panels or surface mount hinges on the backs and sides of shutters. We specialize in hard to find hardware that is aged or historically correct, such has the old fashioned iron H-hinges and the H&L style hinges in black iron and rough finish iron. We also offer a variety of Knobs and latch hook or magnetic catches depending upon your preference. The selection of hardware also affects the overall price dramatically as reproduction hardware and certain finishes is quite costly.
Shutters provide a beautiful window treatment vs. using curtains or blinds and are very well suited in traditional or colonial styled homes. The benefits are that they offer considerable warmth and privacy not to mention aesthetic appeal.
Below are just a few sample settings of shutters (most are four shutter panel bi-fold style) that have been built for customers:
